What is Trihex?
Trihex is an equitable version of tic-tac-toe played on a triangular field with nine lines. The goal is to occupy three rings of your color in a straight line.
How do you play Trihex?
You tap the spot on the prism-shaped board where you want to place your ball. After each of your moves, your opponent’s balls appear automatically. You win by connecting three of your pieces in the same straight line while preventing your opponent from doing the same.
What does the board look like at the start of a game?
At the start, the triangular Trihex board appears empty, with four pieces on each side. The lighter pieces are yours and the darker pieces are your opponent’s.
Why is Trihex described as an “equitable” tic-tac-toe variant?
Thomas H. O’Beirne experimented with topologically distinct nine-row models and found that in regular configurations the starting player can easily win; the configuration used for Trihex is noted as the exception, making the game more balanced.
